Good to know
-
Submission checker
Optional. Turn it on in the extension settings. Claude can then check that a file you chose is ready and the assignment is still open, and give you the link to submit it yourself.
-
Updating
Open the latest ug-sakai.mcpb again, or run the terminal command again. Your login is kept.
-
Where files go
Lecture files Claude reads are saved in ~/SakaiMCP/downloads, organised by course.
-
Uninstalling
Remove it in Claude Desktop under Settings → Extensions (or delete ~/.ug-sakai-mcp), then delete ~/SakaiMCP.
If something goes wrong
- “Sakai rejected the Student ID or password”
- Update your login in Claude Desktop under Settings → Extensions → Sakai-MCP, or run the terminal command again, then restart Claude Desktop. A wrong password is never retried, so your account won't be locked.
- “Login is paused”
- Same as above. It pauses after one rejection to protect your account.
- “Sakai is not responding”
- Check your internet connection, or try again later. Sakai may be down.
- The tools don't show up
- Quit Claude Desktop completely (Cmd+Q on a Mac, or from the tray icon on Windows) and open it again.
- “uv: command not found” after installing
- Close the terminal, open a new one and run the command again.
- “matches more than one course”
- You took that course in more than one year. Ask Claude to list your courses and use the site ID.
Questions
- Is it official?
- No. It's an independent open-source project, not affiliated with or endorsed by the University of Ghana or Anthropic.
- Does it cost anything?
- No. It's free and MIT licensed. You need Claude Desktop or Claude Code, which work with free and paid Claude plans.
- Does it work on claude.ai and my phone?
- Yes. Turn on “Use on claude.ai and my phone” in Claude Desktop while your laptop is on. See the steps above.
- Why did a file link open the Sakai login page?
- Older versions linked straight to Sakai. Every file now comes with its own download link that works without logging in. Ask Claude for the file again.
- Can it see other students' work?
- No. It logs in as you, so it only sees what you can already see on Sakai.
- Will it do my assignments?
- No. The study prompts explain, plan, tutor and review. You produce and submit your own work.
- Which grades can it see?
- Released assignment grades and feedback. UG Sakai doesn't share quiz or exam scores with tools.
